How to use Pludor Self-Order Kiosk: step-by-step guide

Updated 1 October 2026 · Pludor team · 2 sources

Kiosk mode in Pludor POS switches a tablet into a customer-facing ordering screen: customers browse, pick variants, and pay themselves. Sold-out items are greyed out automatically, and leaving kiosk mode requires the staff member's exit PIN.

Common questions

How do I turn my tablet into a self-service ordering kiosk?

In Pludor, open POS on the tablet from the Core Commerce menu, set your staff exit PIN, then tap the Kiosk button in the POS payment options. The tablet switches to a customer-facing screen where guests browse, pick variants and pay. Toggle items sold-out as you run out and they grey out instantly; enter your PIN to exit back to normal POS.

How much does a self-order kiosk cost for a small restaurant?

With Pludor, kiosk mode is on for every store including the Free plan - you get a free amount of usage every month and pay only for what you use beyond that (1 credit = 1 cent). There's no separate kiosk product or hardware subscription to buy. You just need a tablet you already own.

Can customers pay by card at a self-service kiosk?

Yes, but card payment on the kiosk needs a connected card reader or QR pay. In Pludor you can connect Stripe in Settings, then add a card reader in POS via Card Reader > Add Reader, or pair a spare phone as a Smart Terminal. If a payment fails, staff can retry or fall back to QR or cash.

How do I stop customers from messing with the kiosk and exiting the ordering screen?

Set a staff PIN before switching to kiosk mode - leaving kiosk mode requires entering that PIN, so customers can't get back into the POS. In Pludor, add staff and PINs in Team Staff or POS settings, then only your team can exit the kiosk screen. This is the standard way to lock down any customer-facing tablet.

What happens on the kiosk when an item sells out?

Sold-out items are greyed out automatically so customers can't order them. In Pludor, toggle a product as sold-out in your catalog and it disables on the kiosk instantly - no need to rebuild the menu. Remember to toggle it back when the item is available again.

Is a self-order kiosk worth it for a quick-service restaurant or cafe?

Yes, at busy times one cashier often becomes the bottleneck and customers leave the queue - a kiosk lets customers order and pay themselves. It suits quick-service restaurants, cafes, food trucks and any shop with queues. Pludor's kiosk mode is built into the POS, so you don't need to buy a separate kiosk product.

Do kiosk orders sync with my online store and POS inventory?

With Pludor, yes - kiosk mode runs inside the POS, which shares the same catalog, stock and orders as your online store. A sale on the kiosk reduces the same stock as an online order. With typical POS systems you'd need a matching online platform or a sync app to get this.

How is Pludor's kiosk different from Square, Toast, Clover or Shopify POS?

The main difference is that Pludor's kiosk is a mode inside the POS rather than a separate kiosk product, and counter, kiosk, kitchen, tables and online orders all run on one catalog and one order list. Card hardware is Stripe readers or a spare phone as a terminal instead of vendor-specific readers. Staff accounts and POS PINs are included rather than an add-on.

How do I set up staff PINs so my team can use the POS and kiosk?

Open Team Staff in the Management menu, invite a staff member by name and email, and give them a POS PIN. Each sale is then attributed to whoever rang it up, and the PIN is what lets staff exit kiosk mode. When someone leaves, remove their access from Team Staff.

Can I run the kiosk and a kitchen display together for a restaurant?

Yes. In Pludor, set your store category to Food & Restaurant in Settings, which turns on Kitchen, Tables, Reservations and Waitlist. Orders from the kiosk arrive as tickets on the Kitchen screen at your prep station, and you can print QR codes for table ordering too. Build your menu with modifiers like sizes and add-ons in Products first.
